I've always thought that stoke looked most promising territory for the bnp and i'm surprised that they haven't done better than they have so far.
stoke north has more manual workers than any other seat and central is 6th. for a midlands city , the numbers of ethnic minorities is small but growing. plus stoke is near enough to birmingham and manchester for locals to be aware of race problems. if i remember the bnp election leaflet in 1997 stated "we don't want this area to go the same way as birmingham" etc local asians have effectively colonised places like etruria and shelton and it would be a brave white man that would walk around these areas after dark. in short it is exactly the type of place that the bnp have recently been tailoring their message for.
moreover local people are very disillusioned with the local labour party. labour won a clean sweep of all 60 council seats in 1996 but it's since been whittled down to 22 with an independent bloc taking up 22/23 seats at present. as the recent burnley results showed , this latter group of independent voters are a fickle lot and are as likely to switch to the bnp as they are to return to the labour fold. in conclusion - watch stoke : it could easily become another oldham.
