Kingsmills. 1976. The republican anlysis/explanation of this was that it was done to halt sectarian conflict - by making the loyalists/unionists aware that thy would pay a heavy price for their activities.

I leave it for discussion whether this worked or was even realistic.

The loyalists/unionists saw it as another catholic/papist massacre, as they have continually ignored all republican aspirations as masking sectarian motives.

BTW it's fairly obvious which side of the fence i'm on so dont expect me to be totally objective...
