what would they be fighting for?

My best guess....an independent Ulster within the 6 Counties. While the idea of such a small and weak state may be silly to most, I believe it would be exactly what the hardcore would look to when Ulster becomes a part of Ireland. I can't see them EVER submitting to Irish rule (maybe in a few generations though), much as Republicans have never submitted to British rule.
