Maybe it is a term coined by those of us on the left-wing of 'mainstream republicanism' in order to politically differentiate us from the past failures represented by groups like the IRSP who have falsely claimed the mantle of 'republican socialism'.

Personally, I would drop the largely discredited 'socialist/socialism' term completely and refer to our strand of republican politics as "left republicanism", in the tradition of James Connolly, Frank Ryan and even Seamus Costello.
